Alive

Yes, I'm alive. I really am.

Maybe I'll be a better blogger slash e-journaler in November. I really want to be.

But don't plan on it.

Slow Dance

Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round,
or listened to rain slapping the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight,
or gazed at the sun fading into the night?
You better slow down, don't dance so fast,
time is short, the music won't last.

Do you run through each day on the fly,
when you ask "How are you?", do you hear the reply?
When the day is done, do you lie in your bed,
with the next hundred chores running through your head?
You better slow down, don't dance so fast,
time is short, the music won't last.

Ever told your child, we'll do it tomorrow,
and in your haste, not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch, let a friendship die,
'cause you never had time to call and say hi?
You better slow down, don't dance so fast,
time is short, the music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere,
you miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
it's like an unopened gift thrown away.
Life isn't a race, so take it slower,
hear the music before your song is over.

I Want To Play

Remember when we used to have time to play? Go outside, do nothing in particular, not worrying about anything. Seeing your friends at any hour of the day because you are both free.

Yeah, I don't remember that either. What does it feel like to be free?

I can't remember...

I Spy Tie Dye

Just walking from my car into work this morning I spotted 5 people wearing tie dye shirts. Um, tie dye? When did that ever decide to come back into style?

Am I behind the times?

In. Sane.

School is insane.
Work is insane.
Life is insane.
I am going insane.

Please excuse my lack of blog posts this semester. Like I said: INSANE.

I Just Can't Wait...

You know that song from The Lion King "I Just Can't Wait To Be King"? Great song. I've had that song stuck in my head for the past few days. It plays in my mind over and over. Not a bad song to get in your head if you ask me. No vulgar language, no subliminal messages (that I know of), no inappropriate lyrics.

The other day I was singing this song and I wondered to myself, "What is it that I can't wait for?" Faster than I knew I could think I thought, "I can't wait to be a wife and a mother."

Two of the most important goals I have set in my life are 1) to become a wife to an amazing man who I love more than anything and who loves me, and 2) to become a mother to the most darling children on earth.

As I do my best to prepare myself for these to goals I become anxious, nervous, excited, terrified, happy, at peace, giddy, and sometimes even a little emotional. These roles: a wife and a mother, are the most precious roles a woman could ever have. I want that.

These roles do not come easily, nor do they come without responsibility. Being a wife and a mother will probably be two of the most difficult things I will ever do in my life. But they will by far be the most rewarding

If you're wondering why I'm so excited, check out The Family: A Proclamation to the World.

Now as I sing that old Lion King song I unconsciously tweak the words to fit myself a little better. Lately I've caught myself singing "I JUST CANT WAIT TO BE A MOM"!

ECHO! (echo)

I'm such a copy cat.

Maybe I'm not creative enough to come up with my own life? When I begin spending a lot of time with a person, I pick up on their weird little traits and start doing them myself. It's pretty annoying actually--for them mostly. They probably wonder why this awkward girl wants to be like them? Really it just happens on accident. I can't stop it.

It's like I'm an obnoxious echo that won't go away.

The Beginning of the End

The end of my summer is quickly approaching. Four more days to be exact. Then school starts. Bleh.

I've been trying to get myself ready for school to start back up (mentally, academically, physically, spiritually, socially--and any other "ally" words). But it hasn't been working. No, I just end up feeling more unprepared, more nervous, more tired, more bothered, more stressed. I don't love school.

Don't get me wrong, I love learning, I love my major, I love "college". But I do not love school. I do not love writing papers, taking tests, doing assignments, studying late. All of that stresses me out. Not my "cup of tea" you might say.

However, it is inevitable. School is right around the corner and it's coming--whether I like it or not. I keep reminding myself that I'm almost done. And I'm not even lying to myself. I really am almost done. Two more semesters (and quite possibly one more Spring term), and I'll be ready to enter the classroom to teach my own students.

I really can't believe it. I'm not old enough to graduate from college. I'm not smart enough. Not ready. But I am so ready. I can't wait to get out there, to make a difference, to do what I've been preparing to do for these last few years.

This is the beginning of the end for me.

Sparse

Sorry my posts have been (and will continue to be) few and far between lately. I've been having too much fun, being too busy, doing too many things, living life bigger, better, and more fully to have time to write about it.

But I will still try.

Simple Words

I wish I could say it like he does. He can paint a picture with words. He can create great meaning out of small expressions. He can make simplicity profound. He can take my breath away with a poem or a song.

He can sing too. He sings like an angel.

Zoo Slash Cabin

Last weekend was full of sheep, cows, deer, moose, snakes, rabbits, humming birds, chipmunks, squirrels, fish, and bugs of all shapes and sizes. You may begin to think I went to the zoo. No, no. I did not do that.

Last weekend I took a few friends up to my family’s cabin. Oh how adventurous I felt. The trip started off by getting only a tad lost—I’d never driven there by myself, ok?

We played on the four-wheelers, made yummy meals, built a fire, roasted mallows, played some games, rode the four-wheelers some more, played in the river, went star gazing, and just had a grand ole time.

The animals were rampant this year. Everywhere we turned we saw another family of deer, another baby moose, another bug we've never seen (and hope to never see again), another exotic bird. I was reminded again just how amazing nature is. The beauty never ceases to amaze me.

We are so lucky to live in such a gorgeous, exciting world.

Motor Mouth

I have a motor mouth. And sometimes it won’t shut up. I realized that sometimes my lips get moving faster than my brain does. Not only do I end up saying ridiculous things, but I stumble over words, I stutter, and I make myself sound like a complete fool.

I heard myself on an answering machine a few days ago. I couldn’t believe how fast I was talking.

I wish I could just slow it down a bit.

Ouch to the Third Degree

The large purplish/brownish oblong shape located on my right forearm may lead you to believe that I have a nasty growth and/or a huge mole. But don’t be fooled. I have neither. Just one big, nasty, sick, wrong, painful burn. A third degree burn to be exact.

While so responsibly and kindly preparing hamburgers and hotdogs for the patrons of my singles ward at our ward pool party, I was so irresponsibly lifted up (clothing still on) and pulled away from the grill to be so rudely thrown into the pool. In the process of my great struggle to not be thrown in, I may or may not have touched the grill for .03 seconds and received a very brilliantly horrible burn to the third degree.

The evening really was quite fun despite my terrible injury. The pool party was a complete success, the food was great, the people were fantastic, the pool was charming.

Now I’ll have a great scar to remember it by. Cool.

A Dream-like Reality

Have you ever had those nights when you’re half conscious-half dreaming so you can’t really tell what’s real and what’s not? I have those all the time. It’s like sometimes I’m sure I’m dreaming, and other times I feel like maybe this is real.

The other night I had that. So, to start off you have to know that I absolutely hate the sound of alarm clocks. It just makes me cringe. (It is good though—because it makes me jump out of bed real quick when my alarm goes off.) But in this dream I was on a game show where I had to sit there while an alarm clock went off for five minutes. If I could let the alarm ring without turning it off for the whole five minutes, I would win.

I remember as the alarm was going off it felt like torture. I wanted to turn it off so bad—but I couldn’t! I had to win. As I was squirming in my seat trying to resist the urge to turn off the horrible sound I came to and realized my real alarm had been going off for two whole minutes. It wasn’t a game show at all. I wasn’t going to win anything. So I jumped out of bed and turned that dreadful thing off.

I was kinda bummed that I had sat through those horrible two minutes just to find out that it wasn’t real. I wanted to conquer my fears and withstand the temptation to cut the cord of that alarm. I wanted to be a winner.

Instead I just kinda felt like a loser.

White Knuckled Driver

I’m a pretty intense driver. Not intense with road rage or anything. More like intense with complete fear.

I really dislike driving. Especially driving on the freeway. My body gets really tense, I can’t think about anything but driving, can’t even glance at a billboard on the side of the freeway. Nope, I’m glued to the road. My knuckles even begin turning white because I’m gripping the steering wheel so tight.

After driving on the freeway for about ten minutes, I have to remind myself to relax. Loosen my grip on the wheel. Let myself lean back on the seat. Relax my shoulders. Blink.

I especially dislike driving in three particular situations: driving on the freeway, driving in the pouring rain, and driving at night. All three of which I had to do last night.

I was most definitely a white knuckled driver.

Taco Tuesday

Each Tuesday some people from my ward (and whoever else would like to join) get together for “Taco Tuesday”. It’s practically tradition. We all meet at Rubio’s Mexican Grill to eat some yummy (well, not my favorite—but they’ll do) tacos. It’s more about the company for me than the actual food. Don’t get me wrong, I love food. But I love people more.

Today is Tuesday. That means tonight is “Taco Tuesday”. And supposedly a boy who cannot be named will be making an appearance.

I’m so there.

I've Got It Good

Life is good to me. It really is.

I may complain a lot and think I got the short end of the stick in many areas of my life (and probably did), but really…I’ve got it good.

I’ve got a great family, a nice home, food to eat, a good job, fun friends. What more could a girl want? Well, besides a studly man to hold hands with?  Other than that, I have no reason to complain.

I’m lucky.

The Bachelor{ette}

I usually don’t get sucked into TV shows. But I did get sucked into this one. Big time.

The Bachelorette. Best show ever.

I’m falling in love with some of these men right along with Ali. (Ok, not really. But they’re totally cute.) Last night was the season finale. And I missed it. I’m dying to watch it when I get home from work today. Seriously, dying.

There are two guys left, and I love both of them. I can’t figure out who she’ll choose. I’m hoping for Chris. He’s darling.

I know this is so shallow and definitely not the way to find love, but it’s so addicting.

Can’t wait to see which cutie she chooses! (Except I have a hunch about how the show ends and I’m not too happy about it.)

Tick-Tock

Aren’t minutes still 60 seconds no matter how tired or ready to leave work you are?

How come the clock moves a hundred times slower when you are watching it?

We're Babies

Even I feel too young to be in college (a junior in college nonetheless). But the weirdest thing is when kids you babysat start college.

I worked New Student Orientation a few weeks ago. I saw 2 kids that I used to babysit. They’re starting college.

When did we grow up? I seriously feel like I’m in sixth grade still. Where is my life going?

Am I Weird?

My friend told me I bring out the "weird" in him.

Should I be flattered? Or embarrassed?

Month of Many

I officially declare August “The Month of Many Weddings”. (We can also include the last week of July—because there are 2 weddings this week too.)

Holy cow. I can’t believe how many of my friends are getting married. It’s seriously weird. Are we even old enough for this you guys?

For 5 weeks in a row (beginning yesterday), I have one or two weddings to attend each week. And these are my friends. Practically 7-year-olds. Getting married. Uhhhh.

It really is so exciting though—all age discrepancies aside. Great dresses, fun colors, exciting music, fabulous food, pure love.  Attending receptions is always fun. Seeing the bride and groom so happy and in love. Catching up with old friends and making new ones. Eating food that clogs your arteries. Dancing like a fool.

One day it will be my wedding. I can’t wait—well, I take that back. I can wait. But I’m really excited.

Dark Circles

Under my eyes pillows of gray have settled. A sign of exhaustion. I think I need a nap. A long nap.

I fell asleep at work today. It was only for a minute--but still. That tells you how tired I am.

And I don't even know why.

Too Sore To Soar

So, the title of this post doesn't entirely make sense--but it's cool with the double homophone thing going on. Sore and soar, too and to. Genius.

Anyway, the truth of this post is that I am so sore. I've been working my little muscle pretty hard. Pretty hard for me is like mild for most people. I'm a weakling. But this kind of sore feels so good. It's not the "oh my heck, I can't move and this is miserable and hurts so bad" kind of sore. It's more like that "oh my heck, I feel so good right now even though it hurts, because I know I am getting stronger" kind of sore. Love it.

Whatever. The point is, if I were asked to soar right now, I wouldn't be able to--I'm too sore.

Serendipity

Ask Karissa, she knows. I live a very serendipitous life. For those who don’t know, serendipity means a fortunate accident.

I have a lot of fortunate accidents in my life. Except—I know they aren’t really accidents. They’re all things that are supposed to happen—we just perceive them as coincidences.

With that said—knowing that nothing in life is a complete accident—I’d like to declare that I live a very serendipitous life. Also, the word serendipity is fun. Often times I find myself in situations that are so fortunate. Sometimes I think, “What a great accident!”

I had another serendipitous moment today.

Also, love the movie Serendipity. Probably my favorite movie ever. Maybe because it’s about my life.

I'm a Morning Person

For the past 2 weeks I have consistently (except that one inconsistent day) been waking up at a ridiculously early hour to go to the gym. Sounds pathetic. I love it.

As much as I hate hearing my alarm at this unearthly hour, if I can just get my shoes on, teeth brushed, and into the car before I have a chance to think, I get to enjoy a great, early morning workout.

I’m always so glad I went (after the fact). But there’s nothing like a good jog before you start your day. Stretching my muscles, toning them, dripping sweat like a disgusto, makes me ready to fight whatever battles come my way that day.

It’s a great time to think. There aren’t too many other wack jobs at the gym at that time, so things stay pretty quiet. I ponder what I’ll do that day, I think about last night and the weird thing I saw, or just day dream about the cute boy I want to date. No one interrupts me.

It’s my “me time”.

Stuck in a Rut

Have you ever been in a dating rut? Or is that just me? Since you can’t answer I’ll pretend that most people have been in a dating rut at some point in their lives.

Well I’m in one. Again. I feel like I’m in them more often than not.

I’ve been on a few dates here and there over the past few weeks, but I haven’t had any great dating experiences. I mean—I’ve had fun, I’ve laughed, I’ve enjoyed my time—I just haven’t been super excited about any of the dates I’ve been on.

I’m ready to meet new people. Go on more dates. Have fun with different types of people. Learn more about myself and others. Even go on dates with people I’ve known for years (well, one person in particular—he just doesn’t get it!). I just need to DATE, ok?

Only problem is: who do I date?

Perfectionism

I finally figured out why I hate writing in my journal so bad, but I can somehow bear to blog. Let me enlighten you (whoever you are).

I am a perfectionist.

Ok there, I said it! I am. I know it. And it’s stupid. I get pretty bothered when things aren’t perfect. (And by perfect—I mean nearly perfect, obviously.)

As I write in my journal (or write anything for that matter), if I misspell a word, use ugly handwriting, don’t space it well, or my thoughts just don’t come out right, I usually rip it out and start over. Ugh. I know. It’s ridiculous. A total waste of paper and ink.

When I’m re-reading journal entries from years ago, if I notice a misspelled word, I cringe. Who cares if I was 9 when I wrote it? I can’t believe I didn’t know how to spell onomatopoeia.

Here’s the quick-fix. Just blog it. E-journal, blog, whatev. It totally works. I don’t have to worry about handwriting or awkward spacing. And if I notice I misspelled a word, all I’ve got to do it click ‘edit post’, fix it, and BAM! Perfection.

The backspace key is also a lifesaver.

Post Script: I already edited this post once. I typed "no" instead of "know".

Just Like Her...

I've been reading my friend KK's blog lately. I love her more and more with each post. She seriously is the greatest. She inspires me. I want to be just like her.

She's artsy, talented, fun, sweet, good-natured, funny, down to earth, and just plain darling.

I want to be related to her. We've already found two ways that could be possible. Either I could marry her little brother (which I do not object to one bit), or she could marry my cousin (if he could stop being a wussy pants and ask her out).

Sometimes

Sometimes everything seems to be going right.
Sometimes nothing seems to be going right.
Sometimes I feel like I'm living the life.
Sometimes I feel like I have no life.
Sometimes I love going to work.
Sometimes I dread it.
Sometimes I eat really healthy.
Sometimes I don't care what anyone thinks.
Sometimes I eat more popsicles than I should.
Sometimes I want to move out.
Sometimes I never want to move out.
Sometimes I go to bed really early.
Sometimes I wake up really early.
Sometimes I tease too much.
Sometimes I love him.
Sometimes he drives me insane.
Sometimes I wish I were in high school again.
Sometimes people bug me.
Sometimes I worry myself.
Sometimes I do really stupid things.
Sometimes I crave exotic foods.
Sometimes I wish I could cook.
Sometimes the night air clears my head.
Sometimes I try to be adventurous.
Sometimes I'm afraid of taking risks.
Sometimes confidence comes easy.
Sometimes I feel on top of the world.
Sometimes my dreams are better than reality.
Sometimes reality is better than my dreams.
Sometimes everything seems under control.
Sometimes everything seems out of control.
Sometimes I love bananas.
Sometimes they make me sick.
Sometimes I'm afraid of the dark.
Sometimes I can't sleep unless it's dark.
Sometimes I want to be surrounded by people.
Sometimes I want to be alone.
Sometimes I know what I want in life.
Sometimes I have no clue what i want in life.
Sometimes I love everything just the way it is.

But only sometimes...

Happy People = Happy Universe

Sometimes people are mean. (Sometimes I'm mean too). But I've tried to take Winn's advice from his book Be Nice (Or Else!).  When some one is being rude, inconsiderate, impatient, and just plain nasty, consider the following:

"Imagine that they are having a terrible day, and the universe sent them directly to you to cheer them up."

What if we all thought this way? If we did our best to cheer up everyone in our path--whether they think they need it or not. I think the universe would be a much happier place.

Swinging and Sliding and Canoeing, Oh My!

Biking, canoeing, hiking, four-wheeling, swimming, rope swinging, fire building, natural water sliding, walking, talking, play attending, movie seeing, exploring, reading, cooking, cabin going, game playing, shopping, rollerblading, laughing, dessert making, sun bathing, girls nights, late nights, date nights, lame nights.

No, I am not Doctor Seuss, those are just some of the highlights of my summer. Sounds fun, doesn't it?! This summer has seriously been the best! Taking the summer off from school was the best decision I could have made. I've been able to do so many fun things and make tons of great memories.

I never want this summer to end. Ever. Except it will. In one month.

Accessorize

What's the best thing about being the girl? (Ok, there are so many best things about being a girl, but this one tops them all.)

The best thing about being a girl has got to be accessories! Am I right?

You're never fully dressed without a great pair of earrings, or a mongo matching bracelet. The funnest part of getting ready in the morning is deciding which necklace or barrette goes perfectly with your outfit.

I just got a new pair of earrings. Love them.

A Season, A Reason, A Lifetime

I can't call the title of this post my own. It comes from the aforementioned book I'm reading, but I couldn't think of a better way to say it.

Winn Claybaugh, (I feel like we're friends by now), talks about the relationships we have in our lives. Each relationship we have--whether great or small, long or short, good or bad--enters our life for a purpose. Winn classifies all of the relationships we have as being for a season, a reason, or a lifetime.

As I reflect on the many different relationships I have had throughout my life, I feel that I too can put each relationship into one (or more) of these three categories.

Some relationships only last a short while. These relationships are for a certain season. Maybe it was your high school group of friends. People who were in your life for just that small season. They could have had a huge impact on you, but once high school was over, you parted ways. Maybe it was a roommate you had for one year. You had a relationship--good, bad, whatever. It was for a season. Relationships that last a season are very important. They help shape who you are and what you'll become.

Other relationships come into your life for a reason. Maybe you teamed up with someone because you were going through similar trials. Or possibly you were drawn to someone because they knew a lot about what you were interested in. These relationships are for a reason. There is some purpose for the friendship you built. These relationships are also very important. They allow you to learn so much about yourself and others.

The other relationships you have may be for a lifetime. These relationships include family, best friends, people you are with often. Lifetime relationships are exciting and rewarding. They are the people who you go throughout life with. The ones you learn, grow, change, mature with. Lifetime relationships must be cultivated and renewed often. They must not be taken for granted. These may be the richest relationships you will ever have.

I honestly believe that every person who crosses your path was put there for a certain reason. Maybe to help you learn a lesson, to encourage you, to help you understand something, to be a mentor. Heavenly Father knows us perfectly and knows who we need and when we need them. I am learning to trust in Him more as I try to learn from every person I meet. No one enters our lives for no reason at all. And that is exciting!

Fake It To Feel It

There are so many things I'm trying to be better at. Most of these things do not come naturally to me and take a lot of work and effort on my part. In the book I'm reading "Be Nice (Or Else!)" Winn mentions that sometimes you just have to go through the motions until it becomes natural to you. Your actions become habits, and eventually your habits become you--they become natural and normal.

The new motto I came up with is this, "Sometimes you have to fake it until you feel it."

When you're on a date and you're just not loving it--laugh, be silly, ask questions. Eventually, you really will be having fun on the date. They may not be your soul mate--but you'll have a good time. If you don't want to go to work, just go. Act like you are so excited to be there, to see everyone, to make a difference in the office. Finally, you will be happy about going to work. If you are mad at someone, fake that you're not. Fake that you think they're the greatest. Laugh with them. Eventually, you can't help but not be mad anymore. When you're trying to get over something, act like you're over it. Pretend like it doesn't bother you. Soon enough, you will be over it. It's simple. "Fake it until you feel it".

Possible Gods and Goddesses

Lately I've been reading a lot of intellectual, thought provoking things. So unlike me. Although I don't always understand them fully, or comprehend their deepest meanings, I always find at least one small part that rings true to me. I am not one who has ever been good with words, so pulling my thoughts together to create meaning is sometimes difficult. However, I do know that all good things are of God.

In a sermon given by C.S. Lewis he says the following:

"It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship."

How exciting that is! All people on this earth are promised the same thing. That if we live righteously, we will one day return to live with our Heavenly Father and experience glory that we have never imagined.  It is a good reminder to me that everyone is a child of God. Each of our brothers and sisters are so glorious, so amazing. How lucky we are to have each other, to learn and to grow, to become perfect through Him, and to ultimately return to live with our Father in Heaven.

My "Be Nice" Mentor

Right now I am reading a fantastic book called "Be Nice (Or Else!)" It is the most fantastic book, and I am learning so much from it. I will probably discuss it at length when I am finished, but I thought I'd share one part right now.

Winn Claybaugh, the author of "Be Nice (Or Else!)" gives the tip to find a "Be Nice" mentor. Someone who you look up to, respect, and admire. Someone who is nice and who you want to be like. He mentions five things to look for in a "Be Nice" mentor.

Your "Be Nice" mentor should be someone who...
            1. Makes you laugh
            2. Makes you feel humble
            3. Makes you feel grateful
            4. Makes you feel thoughtful, pensive, and reflective
            5. Makes you feel and act silly or childlike

I know who my "Be Nice" mentor is. Who's yours?

I hope one day--after lots of work and practice--that someone will choose me for their "Be Nice" mentor.

Be That Person

In Fast and Testimony meeting this month, a wise friend said the following:

"I don't want to be cool, I want to be kind.
I don't want to get ahead in life, I want to serve."

How profound. I don't want to be remembered as the girl who was "cool". I want to be remembered as someone who was nice, loving, understanding, and kind. At times, I do all I can to get ahead in life and I don't realize how many opportunities I am passing up to serve. I don't want to be the most successful, or the richest, or the most knowledgeable. No, I want to be the one who changed someones life for the better. Someone who loves to serve. I want to be that person.

Thank you for the advice Skyler Stice.

A World of Pure Imagination

Last night Karissa and I went to see the play Willy Wonka at the outdoor theater. At the very beginning of the play, Wonka comes out and sings the song "Pure Imagination". I guess I've never paid enough attention to the words of this song--but it has a good message. Those good old classics never fail me!

Pure Imagination: A song I can learn from.

If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it.
Anything you want to, do it.
Want to change the world?
There's nothing to it.

So true, right? These simple words really say a lot. The world is what we make of it--the only thing that is stopping us is ourselves.

Location, Location, Location!

I have to say, my bedroom is in the worst location in the house. Why? Here, I'll tell you...

1. Right above my head is the bathroom. I hear everything that goes on in there. Everything.
2. Also above my room is the washer and dryer. We usually do laundry late at night.
3. Another joy above my head is the dishwasher.  That baby isn't quiet either.
4. Next to my head separated only by one wall is another bathroom. Again, I hear it all.
5. On the other side of me are the stairs. I can keep track of anyone who goes up and down them.
6. If someone decides to go in or out of the back door, I will know--it's right above me too.
7. When the TV is on I get to experience it as well, because it's right outside my door.
8. I wouldn't say the hum of the refrigerator is the best lullaby either. (Did I mention? Just above me.)
9. The ice maker, now that creates a ruckus. Once again--just above my room.

Should I tell you about the locations of all the other bedrooms in the house?

Thomas' and Emily's are just underneath the family room (which anyone is hardly ever in).
Lauren's is below the back half of the living room. The only reason you go there is to iron.
And mom and dad's is tucked nicely away in the back corner of the house, away from it all.

Anyone want to switch?

Cabin Fever

This past weekend we went up the the Burton family cabin....

The cabin where seeing the big green gate means you're almost there.

The cabin where taking a shower is optional.

The cabin where there are 100 children running around at any given time.

The cabin where the 4-wheelers are never given a break.

The cabin where you come home 25 lbs heavier than you went.

The cabin where as soon as you clean up one meal it's time to cook the next.

The cabin where large animals rest in the shade of your porch.

The cabin where staying in your pajamas until mid-afternoon is totally acceptable.

The cabin where fishing is fun--even if you don't catch anything.

The cabin where "swimming" in the creek really means dipping your toes in the freezing water.

The cabin where the campfire is made with a blowtorch.

The cabin where the piano is so out of tune it hurts.

The cabin where a movie is constantly playing--even if no one is watching it.

The cabin where staying up late is the cool thing to do.

The cabin where it doesn't matter how many naps you take in one day.

The cabin where the porch swing turns into a sunbather's paradise.

The cabin where taking out the trash isn't as simple as pulling the can to the corner.

The cabin where the main mode of transportation is a 4-wheeler.

The cabin where games are played late into the night.

The cabin where your stomach hurts from eating too much and laughing too hard.

The cabin where helmet hair is permanent.

The cabin where you get a "talking to" from the neighbors for driving the 4-wheelers too fast.

The cabin where at least a few meals come from the BBQ.

The cabin where smelling like smoke isn't a bad thing.

The cabin where the wind chimes play all night.

The cabin where the days are hot and the nights are cold.

The cabin where you name the soda--we have it.

The cabin where you go through 100 cups because you can't remember where you set your last one down.

The cabin where sleeping on the deck is an adventure.

The cabin where there are always birds at the feeders.

The cabin where Grandpa's telescope can spot anything.

The cabin where more marshmallows are burned than eaten.

The cabin where the dogs eat the leftovers.

The cabin where the need to let someone in or out of the gate is frequent.

The cabin where you're asked a million times to take a child on a ride.

The cabin where potguts and squirrels are abundant.

The cabin where you eat your catch out of pride, not out of want.

The cabin where "many hands make light work".

The cabin where the ping pong table was demoted to the garage.

The cabin where the first thing you smell in the morning is a yummy breakfast.

The cabin where once the kids are in bed the real fun begins.

The cabin where deer sightings are often.

The cabin where it doesn't matter what time it is.

The cabin where you could spend all afternoon skipping rocks.

The cabin where you're lucky to get a warm shower.

The cabin where roads are not paved.

The cabin where the streets are all Indian names.

The cabin where dirt in your teeth just means you had a great ride.

The cabin where air mattresses are not just for sleeping on.

The cabin where you still have cell phone reception.

The cabin where the first place you run is the gumball machine.

The cabin where you might shower with a spider or other large bug.

The cabin where whatever is in the cupboard is free game.

The cabin where 4-year-olds are driving 4-wheelers.

The cabin where memories are made.

The cabin where "there's always room for one more!"

What a fun Fourth of July we had this year! It's always fun to be with family.

Families are Forever

I get to to spend eternity with these guys. Lucky!

Reese Puffs, Reese Puffs

I love Reese Puffs. It has actually become a problem. I could eat them for breakfast every morning--in fact, I do. I know, how childish.

On the back of the Reese Puffs cereal box--like every children's cereal--has little activities to do. The first step on the Reese Puffs is create your own rapper name. To create your name you take the name of a movie villain and add your middle initial. That makes my rapper name "Ursula-A". Totally punk, huh?

Next, you fill in the blanks to create your own rap.

The embarrassing thing? I do the rap in my head every morning. I even do it like a rapper. I've almost got the whole thing memorized.

The best thing? I caught my dad doing the rap yesterday morning.

20 for 20

I'm 20 now. It sounds weird. Twen-ty. No more 'teen' suffixes. Seventeen, eighteen, nineteen--all gone. I had a great birthday. Nice and relaxed. The birthday wishes poured in. I feel blessed to have a great family and so many great friends.

I've been pondering a lot lately on how blessed I am. I decided to make a list of 20 things I am grateful for, because afterall--I'm 20 now! (Disclaimer: This list is not at all comprehensive. I am grateful for far more than 20 things.)

1. This could be broken down into six separate things, but I'll combine them into one for now. My family. I truly am blessed with the most wonderful family in the world. I hate to break it to everyone else--but your family probably isn't quite as cool as mine. I am lucky to have amazing parents who love and care for me. They do much more than I could ever expect, and they surprise me by doing more and more everyday. I have the best sisters, brother, and brother-in-law I could ask for. Don't get me wrong--they're totally weird, but that's what makes them so fun! We have such great times together and I learn so much from each of them. They too do so much for me and their friendship is greatly appreciated. Just laughing as a family, talking about nothing in particular, having deep discussions--whatever it is, I wouldn't want them any other way!

2. I am ever so grateful for my knowledge of The Gospel of Jesus Christ. How lucky I have been to grow up in a home with parents who love the Lord and who have taught me how to live a good life. The understanding I have of the gospel makes everything in life seem so much easier and totally worth it. The blessings that come from being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are innumerable. My testimony is strengthened time and time again as I learn more about my Savior.

3. Who would have thought that out of the billions of people in the world, I would be privileged enough to meet and be friends with the very best ones?! My friends are fantastic. I have too many memories to count of fun times I have had with friends. I learn many valuable lessons from them, and wouldn't trade any of them for anything.

4. Not only am I blessed to have a roof over my head, but I have an amazing home. My parents have worked hard to make our house a home. It keeps us warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. It is comfortable, peaceful, safe. It is the place I long to go to after a stressful day at work, or when things just aren't going right. The environment there is one you can't find everywhere--it's a place of love and acceptance. On top of all that, it is beautiful.

5. If you take the 7 people in my family and add about 100 more, you have my extended family. With grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc., I have the best family around. The time we spend together is special. Although it's rare to have us all in one location at one time, being together with any of my family is exciting. We laugh, we cry, we play. How lucky I am to be part of this family. The Hafen/Burton/Streuling combo is one of a kind!

6. We live in a world that is so colorful and vibrant! I am grateful for the happy colors that I get to see everyday. The world would be a boring place if it were colorless. Luckily, that is not the case. Although color is something I take for granted, I truly am thankful for the things that color my world.

7. Sometimes it's hard to convince myself, but I am also thankful for the opportunity I have had to go to school. Not everyone is as fortunate as I have been to attend nice schools and to get a good education. Also, I have been very blessed to be able to attend college--especially at BYU. The things I learn--not only in the classroom setting--have helped me, and will continue to help me throughout my life. I will have the great opportunity to make my career goals a reality because of the education I have received.

8. Another thing that is hard to be thankful for everyday is work. However, my job is such a blessing in my life. Especially in this hard economic time, I am lucky to have such a nice, comfortable, stable job. Working in the Advisement Center has taught me many valuable lessons. The people who I work with have not only been co-workers, but also friends and mentors. I'm not grateful everyday to go to work, but I am grateful to be able to go to work everyday.

9.  All throughout the world there are countless young men and women, senior couples, and families, serving missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. How thankful I am for missionary work. These people devote a year and a half to three years of their lives to serving our Heavenly Father and sharing the good news with our brothers and sisters. It's not an easy job, but one I am grateful is being done. How many of our brothers and sisters would be lost without missionaries. I have so many friends and family members who have and are currently serving missions. And to them, I am grateful. I look forward to the time when I may be able to serve a mission--whether it be as a young sister missionary, or as a couple with my husband.

10. Whenever I feel the twinge of hunger in my stomach, I feel grateful for the fact that I can go to the cupboard and grab something to eat. Yet another thing I take for granted: food. I have never, nor expect to ever feel what it really is like to be starving. I always have plenty to eat to keep me healthy and strong. Not only do I have lots of food--I have good food. I am thankful that I can eat something I actually enjoy, rather just eating something to survive.

11. Lately I've been watching the news more than usual. When I hear about countries where people are not safe, where evil men rule, where they aren't allowed to make their own decisions, I am reminded how blessed I am to live in such a country as the United States of America. This country is a place where I am free. I am free to do as I please, free to think what I want, free to worship how I want, free to be me. I am safe, healthy, happy. I know that not everyone is as fortunate as I, and because of that I am thankful for my country.

12. Everyday when I wake up I can see the beautiful world, hear the exciting sounds, smell the delicious smells, taste the wonderful tastes, and feel the things around me. How blessed I am for my 5 senses that are in great working condition. They make life fun, exciting, and pleasurable.

13. Although I could definitely be living a healthier lifestyle, I am thankful for my health and strength. I have been clothed with a strong body. I am able to do the things I need to and want to do. I can run, jump, sing, go anywhere, do anything, because I am healthy.

14. Living in this time and place is such a blessing. The technology we have is amazing, and something I am grateful for everyday. I appreciate all the work that has been done as technology has advanced. Forgetting my cell phone for one hour while running an errand is quite dramatic--I can't imagine the days when they weren't even invented. We have so many great opportunities because of the advanced technology that we have. The internet, cars, cell phones, computers--and many things I don't even know about--are making our world exciting.

15. My favorite thing to do on a warm summer evening is to take a walk through the canyon. How beautiful our world is. I am so thankful for nature. The plants and animals, the sky, the water. There is nothing like walking through the canyon, feeling the breeze on my face, looking up at the huge mountains that surround me.

16.  Over the years I have been so blessed with great examples in my life. My family, friends, ward members, and complete strangers, have left great impressions on me as they do their best. There is one ward member in particular who is an outstanding example to me. He is the first to help do anything, the first to invite someone to play, the first to laugh at anything, the first to share his testimony. He doesn't care what others may think--he just does what he knows is right. I watch him everyday make someone feel like the most important person in the world. It is examples like this friend who help me to keep doing my best.

17. When I am cold, or spill on my shirt, or just hate what I am wearing--I am so grateful that I have warm, nice, clean, cute clothes to put on. There are so many people who do not have the beautiful things that I am blessed with. I am so fortunate to have clothing to keep my body safe.

18. Laughter is the best medicine. I am thankful to have people in my life to make me laugh. Laughing keeps me happy and keeps me going. What a boring place this world would be with out laughter. Being funny, making jokes, laughing about old memories. I could spend hours with the people I love just laughing--it truly does make you feel better.

19. I am thankful for lazy, warm, peaceful summer nights. It's great to feel the warmth on my skin, while knowing I don't have any homework to do. Although I usually end up staying up a little too late--it's always worth it to enjoy a nice summer evening.

20. All in all, the most important thing I have been blessed with is my life. I am so lucky to be on this earth at this time, in this place, with this body, with this family, with these friends, seeing the things I see, doing the things I do, and just being me. While sometimes there are things in my life that aren't going quite the way I want, I always know that my life is mine--and I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Blessings in my life are rich and are abundant. I thank my Heavenly Father everyday for the countless blessings I receive.

PS--There are 5 new baby ducklings. You don't know how happy that makes me.

It's Hard Being Normal

Right now I'm reading a great book. It's called Daniel Isn't Talking by Marti Leimbach. This book is about a young family who is devastated to learn that their son is autistic. The fear, the pain, the trials all seem to tear this little family apart.

After being told by countless doctors that her son would never be normal and could not be helped, Daniel's mother decided to take things into her own hands. She would work with Daniel every day to help him learn and develop. Through her patience and determination, Daniel became more and more like what the world would call "normal".

As I think about how difficult it would be to have a child with a disability, I am amazed at this woman's strength. Although this is only a story, it has been inspiring.

Another thought that I have had while reading this book is how "normal" is all relative. What is "normal" really? Who decides what is normal and what is abnormal? Everyone is different, and everyone is valuable. It doesn't matter what disabilities we have, because we all have them. What a boring place this world would be if we were all the same. How lucky we are to have different strengths and weaknesses than those around us. We are able to work together to lift one another up. We all need each other, and none should be left behind.

Even being considered "normal" is hard. There are certain expectations to live up to, certain do's and don'ts. But what really matters is that I am me. We should not try to fit the "normal" mold, or be someone who we are not. Being who we really are is what is important.

I love the people that I love not because they are normal, but because they are them. And more often than not--they are weirder than heck! And that's what makes me love them the most. My "different" family, and "different" friends, are the best "different" I know!

Conversation Recall

Have you ever had one of those days where you wish you could take back everything you said? Not because it was rude or bad or anything--just because it was pure stupid.

Yesterday was one of those days. Every joke I said, every whitty comment I made, even every potentially "normal" thing I said I wanted to recall. I don't know why. I guess it was just an off day.

I swear it happens especially bad with boys--boys I like. I have a conversation with them, and then I'm laying in bed that night replaying over and over again in my head just how dumb I sounded. And there's nothing I can do about it.

It happens over text too.

I wish there was a "delete my last comment" button. I would have used it a lot yesterday.

You Can Call Me Master

The college that I work in is working on updating our website. My office, the advisement center, has a part of the website that we are supposed to design and maintain (update information, add new things, etc.). The other day my boss asked me if I would be in charge of our portion of the site. Of course, I couldn't say no to my boss, so I agreed.

I had a little training session with a girl from another office. It was helpful, but when she left, it was like she never came. Designing a website is a lot harder than I thought. There is so much trial and error, it's insane. It literally takes me like 3 hours to figure out how to make one link look right. Seriously.

After a few days of working on the website I feel like I'm getting a little better. A little. Not much. I actually feel pretty cool that hundreds of students are going to be using my website. Although I'm getting the hang of it, I have to admit--I'm not cut out for a computer programmer. :)

However, that makes me the new web-master. You can go ahead and start referring to me as Master Rebekah. That'd be fine.

Laughing and Loving

I was surfing the internet yesterday and I came upon this little gem...

“Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live.”

Honestly I have nothing profound to say about it. But I love this quote.

On My Mind

What's on my mind today? A lot of things. A lot of random things. And I'm just going to compile them all.

First bit of news. My baby ducklings are gone. I miss them. I'm sad everyday when I come to work that they aren't there to greet me. It really makes me sad, which is weird, because I don't like ducks--only my babies.

Second, Janet Lindsay's homemade raspberry-peach jam? Heaven on Earth.

Next, school's out for the summer! I just had my very last class of the term. It truly is a beautiful thing. One final to go and freedom is mine! I can't wait. Like I've mentioned before, this summer is the first I have taken off since graduating high school. Pure bliss (with work thrown in there too--bleh). Bring on the Summer sun!

I have a bracelet from American Eagle. I wear it practically every day. Today is the first time I've really noticed a little motto they have etched onto the clasp. It says "Live Your Life". Great advice American Eagle. Seriously. Sometimes I get so caught up in other people's lives, or what my life should be or could be like, and I forget to just live my life. It sounds so simple--but it really is profound. Don't let the little things pass you by. Don't go throughout life without actually living. I wear this little reminder around my wrist everyday. Hopefully I'll be a little better at living my life to the fullest.

Lately my mind has been filled up with schemes of how to get myself on a trip to California. I've been wanting to take a road trip for quite some time now. Hopefully now that school is out, I can make those dreams a reality!

I created a list of random things I want to do before this summer is over. The list is quite short--I don't require a lot. Here is my Summer To-Do List: 1) Go to Lagoon. Not the coolest amusement park ever, but it's definitely something you have to do once a summer. 2) Road trip. See above. 3) Visit the zoo. I know, it sounds totally childish, but I've done it with a friend before and it really is fun. 4) Ride the lift at Sundance at dusk. Beautiful. And quite romantic. I guess I'll need a boyfriend before this. 5) Tube down the Provo River. One of the funnest Summer activities. Quite the adventure, and something you've gotta be able to say you've done. 6) Go boating. I haven't been for a few years. And that's it! That's all I need to make my Summer complete (well, including lots of 7-Peaks trips, countless snow cones, and many yummy BBQ's)!

Was whoever invented sports terminology hungry? We have different football bowls, soccer cups, baseball players run to plates, volleyball players serve, ping-pong (is that a sport?!) is played on a table. That's why you should eat before you go to work. (This thought is a product of the Fifa World Cup that is going on right now. Go USA!)

My teenage days are quickly coming to an end. There are only 7 of them left. I'm not sure if I'm more sad or excited to be ending this era. Right now, I'm sad. I never thought I would actually be sad to have a birthday. But for some reason, knowing that I will never again be a teenager kinda makes me sad. I could blame all of my immaturities and silly childish behaviors on the fact that I was just a teenager. Next week, I'll have to grow up. I don't know if I like that.

Nevertheless, my birthday is in one week.

Another thing on my mind is how big of a nerd I am. Right now I'm in this "read everything you can get your hands on" phase. Nerd alert! I've been reading a lot of great books, and even keeping a list of all the books I want to read this summer. If I don't have plans one night, I'm very content cracking open a good book.

(I told you...there are a lot of things on my mind today.)

Being in the Relief Society Presidency, I hear about a lot of things. Many of them are sad or hard things. But hearing these things make me so grateful for my life. While sometimes I think I have rough patches in my life, when I put them into perspective and think about all of the hardships I could have, I realize I've got it good. I wouldn't trade my life, my trials, my happinesses, my family, my anything--for anyone else's.

There are many other things flying around in my mind, sometimes it's hard to just sort them all out.

Over and Out.
